Interview conducted in Spanish and English
Interviewer: Dayle Altamirano Gonzalez
Translator: Andrea Arvizu Mrs. Tyer has taught English for seventeen years, twelve years at Patriot High School, and five years at Rubidoux High School. Currently, she is helping newcomer students -- not just those new to Patriot, but those who are new to the United States -- learn English as a second language (ESL). Mrs. Tyer enjoys coming to work and making a difference in her students' lives. Most of her students come to the school knowing little to no English, and Mrs. Tyer likes seeing the progress her students make and celebrates the learning moments. She was inspired to pursue this field when her oldest daughter was in high school. Most of her classmates were having a hard time due to the lack of support from teachers. This motivated Mrs. Tyer to become a teacher to high school students.
Mrs. Tyer shared her opinion on AI. She stated that it can be a positive and negative thing. She added, "It can be a good thing for students to learn information, but it can be bad for them if they rely upon it to do their work." She wants all her students to understand how to do things on their own, without having to rely on AI for every assignment.
She celebrates her students' progress and ensures they know they are doing a great job. She loves seeing her students improve and it makes her happy. Mrs. Tyer's philosophy as a teacher is to always be available to help students when they are having a difficult time learning English.
She has made a huge impact on her students' lives. As one of her students, I know that in her class, students have gone from knowing a little bit of English to maintaining a conversation in English with others. She is extremely proud of all her students and is glad she gets to help them.
Mrs. Tyer is a teacher who is very committed to her work and dedicates many hours to her students. In her free time, she likes to walk and spend time with her nine grandchildren and her beloved husband.
