Teacher Focus - Meeting Mrs. Levin

Fun fact: Mrs. Levin LOVES Star Wars!

Despite it being only her second year of teaching, Mrs. Levin has managed to become a big part of our school. After high school, she understood college wasn’t for her so instead she jumped straight into the workforce. Mrs. Levin experienced other jobs such as retail and police dispatching, and finally landed in banking where she stayed for a couple of years.

Mrs. Levin says, “As I tell my students, my hands have seen millions of dollars, but I never got to keep any of it.” Later on, she realized there was no space to move up in any of the fields she was trying. “I didn’t find an end game in any of those jobs,” she states. With this newfound perspective, she decided to go to college, starting at Riverside Community College. Mrs. Levin would take a semester of Law Enforcement but soon found herself not enjoying it as much as she had expected. Still unsure of what her career could be, she decided to speak to her English professor. Her professor recommended teaching English.

Mrs. Levin says she won't be changing careers anytime soon. Having worked many different jobs has given her a different perspective than most. Her love for the students is what brings her back every day. Her desire to leave them with wisdom that goes further than just the English subject area is another motivator. She tells students that sometimes life in general, “Is not always a straight line,” she shares, referring to life after high school. “You could say you really want to go to college, but then life gets in the way and that's ok.”

Mrs. Levin hopes her students understand the importance of English in their lives. English is embedded in our lives, in our jobs, emails, resumes, and in the way we communicate. She explains, “It's helping people get prepared for the outside…as long as you can remember anything I’ve told you ten years down the road, then maybe I’ve done my job just a little.”
