Teacher Focus - Meet Ms. Fuentes

Ms. Fuentes, her two children and her husband, Mr. Monroy

Who is Ms. Fuentes? She teaches Spanish and Chicano studies for dual-language students. Our dual-language program at PHS includes being proficient in both English and Spanish. She has been a teacher at PHS for seven years. Ms. Fuentes was inspired to become a Spanish teacher because of her own Spanish teachers in high school (Mr. Reynoso, Ms. Morales, and Mr. Guzman from Rubidoux High School were her Spanish teachers). Her teachers motivated her, making her fall in love with the Spanish language and Spanish culture. Once she became a teacher herself, her own students made her feel like she made the right decision.

Ms. Fuentes is also the club advisor for two clubs: National Honor Society (NHS) and Baile Club. NHS is a club where students are empowered with the knowledge and skills to become leaders in their school and community. It also prepares students for college and encourages students to maintain a high work ethic in academics.

The Baile Club is a club where students can express their love for all different types of Mexican dances. Members of the club have the opportunity and the creativity to put together dances for school rallies, school events, or just for fun.

I asked Ms. Fuentes what piece of advice she would like to give her students. She replied, “Un dia a la vez” (One day at a time) and “To make memories”. When I was interviewing Ms. Fuentes, she was a very welcoming and a very fun person to be around with. Her classroom is welcoming and warm, and also very interactive. She tries to make her lessons fun and educational at the same time. For example, you will do a lot of group work or partner work which helps you to grow as a student. Her projects, skits, and celebrations of all Latin America are fun and some of my favorite things I’ve done in high school.

Ms. Fuentes is the type of teacher who will always try to cheer you up if you are having a bad day. As a former student of hers, she has truly inspired me to become a better person and better student.
