A Principal’s Beginning

Updated: Oct 30, 2024

Mrs. Brush, in her first year as principal of Patriot High School, seems to be someone students can rely on. In her first few months as principal, she and the new administration have made changes throughout PHS, such as the new absent incentives. I can’t help but wonder what could be next.  When asked, she stated that in the future, she intends to reinstill academic tutoring and implement a Wellness Center, a place where students can receive mental help services and a place to manage students' health. This center appeared to be a main concern of hers.

Throughout the entire interview, she was extremely open, engaging, and answered each question with deep thought. When I asked about her thoughts on phones and AI, instead of attacking the use of these, she proposed AI literacy in hopes that students learn how to use technology properly.

Before working in administration, she was a teacher at Patriot, which helped to form her beliefs about education. Her fundamental philosophies for managing this school seem to be rooted in an improved and genuine student-teacher relationship. She stated that it is, “statistically proven that grades improve when there are more interactions in the classroom.”  She recognizes and empathizes with things students and staff experience outside of school. Her best piece of advice was, “Do something today that your future self will thank you for."
