In the first half of the 2024-2025 school year alone, Patriot High School has presented a plethora of new clubs and sports for its students to partake in. One of these is the new Boys Volleyball Club. What started as just a small group of friends who consistently played on the blacktop after school has now evolved into something much greater, with high hopes of making it an official school sport in the near future. The club began when Aries DeLeon, the current president of the club, as well as his friends and others who took an interest in the sport, came together and searched long and far for an advisor. He says “I decided to do it because of my passion for playing volleyball,” and from there, they scheduled meetings and time to condition and play much like any other sport.
Their initial turnout at the beginning of the year was 70+ boys most of which stayed to see the club come to a nice blossom. Over time, the boys have become like family to one another. For them, volleyball was not just a sport, but a way of life. Their current coach, a fellow student and varsity volleyball player Karina Watts, expressed her joy for the club stating, “It's a great way for guys to participate in more school activities.” Some of the players also shared the same sentiment saying, “We want to get more people and have them enjoy it as much as we do.” Although their club is primarily for boys all are welcome to join them on Tuesday and Friday after school. Their goals are to bring more people together and eventually with time make it into a sport. These students, whether or not they know it, are making history and paving the way for the future.
